Caring for ferrets

Ferrets live 6 to 10 years, are playful and curious, and need a meat-based diet, hours of supervised play every day, a ferret-proofed home and vaccines against distemper and rabies.

Check the law

Ferrets aren't allowed as pets in California, Hawaii or New York City, and some other places need a permit. Check before you buy.

Diet

Ferrets are strict carnivores with short guts. Feed a high-protein, meat-based ferret food or a vet-guided raw diet, and no fruit, vegetables or sugary treats.

Play and safety

They need at least 4 hours out of the cage daily. Ferret-proof the room: they squeeze into tiny gaps, get into recliners and appliances, and swallow rubber and foam, which causes blockages.

Ferrets are happiest in pairs or groups.

Health

Vaccinate against canine distemper (almost always fatal in ferrets) and rabies. Unspayed females can die from staying in heat; ask your vet about spaying or hormone options.

Older ferrets often get adrenal disease or insulinoma; yearly vet visits catch them early.
