Yellow-naped Amazons are confident, playful, loud and long-lived parrots that often talk well. They need a large cage, daily time out, and a diet that keeps them from gaining weight.
A lifelong commitment
With good care many live 40 to 60 years or more, so plan for who will care for your bird if your life changes.
Amazons are loud, especially in the morning and evening. Some, often males in breeding season, become nippy or territorial; calm, consistent handling helps.
Housing and exercise
Choose a cage at least 90 cm wide with 2 to 2.5 cm bar spacing, plus a play stand. Several hours out of the cage every day and plenty to chew help keep them fit and content.
Diet
Amazons gain weight easily. Feed a quality pellet as the base with plenty of vegetables, a little fruit, and few seeds or nuts. Weigh your bird regularly and ask an avian vet about a healthy weight.
