Quaker parrots (monk parakeets) are chatty, clever and often good talkers. Before you get one, check your local rules: they're illegal to keep in some US states and restricted in others.

Check the rules first

Because escaped Quakers can form wild colonies, some US states ban them and others require a permit or registration. Check with your state or provincial wildlife agency before buying.

Housing

A cage at least 60 by 60 cm with 1.3 to 1.9 cm bar spacing. Quakers like to build and arrange things, so give them paper, cardboard and safe nesting material to play with. Secure the door; they're good at opening latches.

With good care many live 20 to 30 years or more, so plan for who will care for your bird if your life changes.

Diet

A quality pellet with plenty of vegetables and some fruit. Quakers can put on weight, so keep seeds and nuts as treats.
