Cockatiels are gentle, affectionate small parrots known for their crests and whistling. They often bond closely with their people.
Lifespan
Typically 15 to 25 years: plan for a long-term companion.
Housing
A roomy cage with bar spacing around 1.5 to 2 cm (5/8 to 3/4 inch), wide enough for full wing stretches, and daily time out of the cage.
Cockatiels can panic in the dark (often called night frights). A small night light near the cage helps.
Diet
Pellets or a quality seed mix as a base, plus fresh vegetables and greens daily. Hens can lay eggs without a mate; ask your vet about calcium and how to discourage repeated laying.
Home life
Cockatiels make a fine powder down that can bother people with allergies or asthma. An air purifier and regular baths help.
Noise
Moderate. Most whistle and call, especially at dawn and dusk.
