Caring for sugar gliders

Sugar gliders live 10 to 15 years, must live with other gliders, are awake at night and need a carefully balanced diet and a tall cage. They bond deeply but are demanding pets.

Never alone

Gliders live in colonies; a lone glider becomes depressed and can self-harm. Keep at least two, and plan for daily bonding time in the evenings.

Diet

They need a balanced mix of protein, nectar and fresh produce, with the right calcium to phosphorus balance. Follow a vet-approved glider diet; deficiencies cause weak bones and hind-leg paralysis.

Cage and nights

A tall cage (at least about 90 cm high) with branches, pouches, a glider-safe wheel and toys. They're vocal at night, so think about where they'll sleep in your home.

Vet and local rules

Find an exotics vet before you buy. Sugar gliders aren't allowed in California, Hawaii or Alaska, and need a permit in some other places.
